Curriculum Overview
Lakecrest offers an engaging and
strenuous academic program. We challenge the most highly able learners.
Enrichment is built into the design of daily lessons at all grade levels. By law, we are required to teach the provincial curriculum outcomes set by the Department of Education of Newfoundland and Labrador. We strive to exceed those criteria by enriching the curriculum to bring out the best in our very able student learners. From our full-day Kindergarten Program through to our Grade Nine Program (including the opportunity to complete some first year high school credits) we work to challenge every student to the full extent of his or her capability.

Our standardized test
scores over the years are one measure which shows that our students
are exceeding provincial and national norms in all subject areas. To

Nine, please click on the link below:

In standardized tests which correlate
well with similar measures in the United States and the United
Kingdom, our students have excelled as a group. Over the years, Lakecrest students have
consistently scored from twenty-five to thirty-five percent above the
national average.
The following text below
expands further on the curriculum by going into more detail on the
various core subject areas Lakecrest students are expected to excel
in.
Accurate and high level language skills allow individuals to exert
control over their lives. Through reading children deepen and extend
their experiences, add to their knowledge about the world, and escape
into other worlds. They learn how language is used in different kinds
of discourse. The Language Arts program will focus on the development
of strong communication skills.
Science
The
major emphasis of Lakecrest science program is the development of
process skills within the framework of an enquiry approach. Specific
topics serve as the context in which skills, understanding and
attitudes are developed. The program emphasizes a hands-on
investigation of science and the natural environment and extends
students' curiosity about their world around them.
French
A goal of the French program is to equip students with the ability to
communicate and discuss ideas and information in French. The program
will develop skills in the four major components of language learning:
speaking, listening, reading and writing. In addition, an integral
part of the program will focus on cultural aspects relevant to the
French language. This will lead to the natural integration of language
learning in subject areas such as art, literature, music, history and
geography. A significant portion of the weekly schedule will have
students working towards acquiring competency in French. At least 120
minutes per week will be allocated to the learning of French at both
the primary and elementary grades.

Fine Arts
The
Fine Arts program will contribute to the development of the whole
child. An integral part of the program includes expanding the
children's knowledge and appreciation of Fine Arts. Students will
participate in activities such as creating, performing, listening,
viewing and critiquing. Students will share the experiences of local
and visiting artists through attendance at performances, exhibitions
or workshops. The Fine Arts program is an ideal opportunity to enrich
each child's ability to recognize the life-long pleasures to be gained
from the arts.
Mathematics
A
major premise of the mathematics program is that children learn best
when actively involved in the process. The mathematics program will
develop and extend mathematical competencies through strategies such
as manipulation, practice, graphing and drill. Another focus of the
program will centre on children's ability to demonstrate their
understanding by clearly describing the problem solving strategies
used. The students' competencies will be enhanced by regular exposure
to and involvement with relevant and stimulating resources. There will
be strong emphasis on relating mathematical concepts to students'
daily experiences. The program will foster within each learner a sense
of accomplishment and success with numeration, operations,
measurement, geometry and graphing.
Social Studies
The
ultimate goal of the social studies program is to develop qualities of
good citizenship and an understanding of the world of the past, the
present and the future. The children will achieve this goal through
actively acquiring knowledge, interpreting information, raising issues
and concerns, and suggesting solutions. Whereas a goal of
Lakecrest
is to foster a sense of community, the social studies program will be
a natural link between the students and society.
Physical
Education and Health

Physical education is an integral part of our total school program. It
contributes to the development of the "whole child" through activities
selected from a well balanced program. Instruction is given in the
following areas:
Games: skipping, baseball, juggling, bowling
Outdoor Education: orienteering, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing,
walking and hiking.
